Access to Internet Resources

Time Limit
Internet use is limited to two hours per library card holder per day and one hour per day for guest pass users.

Responsibility of Users
Because the Internet enables access to offensive and/or illegal material, it is the responsibility of you the user, to comply with applicable federal, state and local laws and regulations, including ORS 167.087, which addresses disseminating obscene materials There are resources on the Internet that- while not necessarily illegal- are inappropriate for viewing in a public setting. Because the library is a public place shared by people of all ages, the library staff reserves the right to end an Internet session when such material is displayed.

Children’s Use of the Internet
The Ledding Library upholds and affirms the right and responsibility of parents and guardians to determine and monitor their children’s use of all library materials and resources. Library users, whether children or adults, are the final selectors in using the Internet and are responsible for their individual choices and decisions.

Internet Use Rules and Procedures
The general expectation of these rules is that Internet users will behave in a manner that does not disturb other library users, disrupt the operation of the library, or endanger library materials and equipment.

1. Reserving time at Internet work stations:
  a. To reserve time on a workstation, Internet users should make a reservation at the Reservation Kiosk or ask library staff for assistance.
  b. An Internet workstation may be reserved for thirty minutes at a time.
  c. Latecomers forfeit their entire reserved time if they have not logged onto their reserved computer within 10 minutes.
  d. Problems not covered by these rules will be resolved by the staff on duty.
2. Since space is limited and noise from group conversations is disruptive to others, more than two people should not gather at one Internet workstation.
3. Personal software programs may not be used on the library’s computers. This will help prevent computer viruses that are common to public computers.
4. To ensure the equitable delivery of all library services, the amount of time that Reference staff have to provide Internet instruction will be limited.
5. Failure to use Internet workstations appropriately and responsibly may result in revocation of Internet use privileges, library privileges and or criminal prosecution. Users may not:
  a. Use the Internet work stations to gain unauthorized access to the library’s network or computer systems or to any other network or computer system.
  b. Obstruct other people’s work by consuming large amounts of system resources or by deliberately crashing any library computer system.
  c. Make any attempt to damage computer equipment or software.
  d. Make any attempt to alter software configurations or install any software.
  e. Make any attempt to cause degradation of system performance.
  f. Violate copyright laws or software licensing agreements.
  g. Engage in any activity that is disruptive to library users.
  h. Violate federal, state, or local laws or regulations.

The Ledding Library of Milwaukie reserves the right to suspend the library privileges, including use of the Internet, of anyone who willfully violates library policies or procedures. Repeat offenses may result in permanent suspension from the library.
